A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
