The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
