RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
